Key Strengths Required of an "Accounts Manager" in Advertising

A number of aspirants are fascinated towards a career in Advertising, and apply to places like MICA, without knowing the role of an Accounts Manager. This is a pet question at MICA interviews. The term has nothing to do with finance. Managing advertising clients (Client servicing) on behalf of your advertising agency and  managing Brands/accounts is what they offer when you come out from C-Schools(Commmunication Schools) as they would like to call themselves inorder to differentiate themselves from the rest of the  B-Schools! The function of an Account manager in advertising is an ambigious one when it comes to defining it in exact terms. Some of the key strengths required of an Accounts manager could be:

1. Creativity. Ability to initiate and nurture ideas. They can spot a good idea early and are passionae about music, films, theatre, literature and other similar hobbies which require a creative expression.

2. Insightfulness. A natural flair towards research and a keen sense of observation. they pick things from every day life, nature and easily draw inferences . They also interpret human behavioral patterns and reactions. Can identify and have insight to consumer preferences and how brands influence mind sets.

3.Pro-activeness. Marketing guys redefine the market by introducing new products and services. Account managers partner them . They understand the market dynamics well and always manage to surprise clients with new products or service ideas.

4. Conflict management. This requires a very high order of people management skill, as Advertising ideas require a constant conflict between logical and lateral thinking. He has to balance the creative thought to reality, the product excitement to buyers perception and egos and super egos at work.

5. Sense of Humour. A natural wit and ability to laugh at oneself, life in general and have a dig even at the most serious of topics without going off balance is perhaps a god given strength which differentiates the ordinary from the genious in this profession.
